IIT JEE….. a dream for all the engineering aspirants. A dream of more than 50% of the students who have just passed class Xth….. It is not only one of the toughest exams in India, but also worldwide…. Every student devote their 2-3 invaluable years with a mission to clear JEE and get into an IIT but as always clearing IIT doesn’t ensure you a berth in IITs.

The other options for the main list of JEE are ISMU Dhanbad, IT-BHU, 8 new IITs(bcz any rational student should not be considering new IITs in their choice equally with the old 7 ones), IISERs, RGIPT, IIST. Even in this list, whenever a student comes across the name of ISMU Dhanbad, the first reaction is like “ohh not dhanbad and this mining college, anything else would be good”. The same opinion was with me but I never repent of joining ISMU. It has offered me services and facilities more than what I did expect. And trust me, the environment and the creative work list is getting refined everyday.

So I have decided to plant 11 reasons why any student should come to ISMU Dhanbad. Its not a comparative analysis b/w two institutes but simply a merit list eliminating many myths and undesirable fantasies about this prestigious institute.

1. PLACEMENT :- ISMU’s main strength is in its placement. Placement of petroleum students are among the best in country at par even with IIM Ahmedabad and any branch in any IIT. Placement of other earth science branches are also very good. Placement of other branches like CSE, EE, ME etc are improving every year. But prefer Petroleum engg before anyother branch in ISM.

2. Faculty :- Faculty @ ISM Dhanbad is one of the best in India. Quality of education is sincerely good and the professors really put their effort in subjects.

3. WorkLoad :- If ever you dreamt of an institute which hardly ever gives you an assignment or tutorial to complete, an institute where you are not treated like studious robots and you have to work only a little to get through the semesters, ISMU is for you. Not only the workload is easy but even one day labour can score wonders in the exams.

4. Infrastructure :- Infrastructure @ ISMU is ofcourse not better than IITs but still its clearly one of the best among all other colleges in India. You will certainly have more than what you can use.

5. Prestige :- It is possible that you may not have heard ISMU’s name before your rank arrived, but it hardly makes any difference to its prestige. It is an institute of 1926 ( younger to IIT Roorkee only ), and from 1926 onwards it has always set high standards of education.

6. Higher Studies :- ISMU’s professors (especially in earth science) are world reckoned and their recommendation can help you fetch a seat in foreign universities for higher studies. Though getting recommended is tough, but ofcourse easier than clearing JEE.

7. Tournaments :- There are a whole range of sports tournaments here. Now even a SQUASH court is also being developed which will add another feather to ISMU’s sports strength. There is MUQABLA(inter collg cricket tournament), CALCIO CUP(inter collg football tournament), REBOUND(inter collg basketball tournament) and others. Besides there is always some intracollg sports competition going on in the collg. However it still lacks a swimming pool.

8. Food Quality :- The food quality is certainly better than most of the IITs. The mess is managed entirely by the students, enhancing not only the food quality but also the service. So as long as you desire to eat good food you will get it.

9. Dhanbad as a Place :- Dhanbad is a place as safe as any town in the country. There is no reason to doubt over the security of the region. I have come to ISM Dhanbad from station many a times at 1.00 am or 2.00 am in the night and my experience declares it a safe city. Moreover Dhanbad is a well alive city with multiplex, shopping complex, quality restaurants and everything. It is hardly 4-5 hours away from Kolkata.

10. Cultural Fest :- Cultural Fest is the one which sets any college apart from the rest. “SRIJAN” is the main cultural fest and according to The Telegraph, it is the biggest cult fest of eastern India. Moreover there are lots of other departmental fests like SPARX, MECATHLON which brings out your technical qualities. OORJA is the rock band competition. ROBOTICS has always been great at ISM and the opportunities are endless.

11. Senior Junior Relationship :- The Senior Junior relationship @ ISM Dhanbad has been absolutely fantastic over the years. This is the tradition which is still throbbing @ ISMU’s heart though almost vanished from most other great institutes.

Well this was my opinion about ISM. The only thing which I don’t like about it is the miserable sex ratio. Though it is not too great in any other IIT but here it is somewhat depressing. ISM has been ranked by Outlook under 10 repeatedly and even students of other institutes have placed it in top 10.

One More Reason to Cheer:- Deptt. of Electronics Engineering @ ISMU Dhanbad has been ranked only 2nd after IIT Kharagpur in East India by the famous electronics magazine “Electronics for You“. The ranking has been decided purely on the basis of the feedback from the Electronics Industry. The 3rd, 4th & 5th positions have been secured by electronics Dept. of IIT Guwahati, Jadavpur Univ. & BSEB. So here is one more reason to cheer for the non-earth science branches.
